Corinth was also famously cosmopolitan: it was a centre for prostitution of two sorts, sacred and secular. The sacred prostitution at Corinth (Pindar F107 Snell/Maehler) is a link with the east, possibly Cyprus. But there was also Corinthian prostitution of a more normal sort, which the archaic tyrant Periander had tried to suppress; the famous fourth- century courtesan Neaira (subject of Demosthenes’ speech 59) came from Corinth. ‘Korinthiazomai’, ‘I act the Corinthian’ (Aristophanes F 354), is supposed to have meant either to be a prostitute, or else to pimp or procure.
